Why do women live longer than men?

Monday, July 14th, 2008

The life expectancy gap between men and women is shrinking in recent years, however women have always outlived men.

Here’s why:

Men tend to drink and smoke more than women.  On average women seek medical help more often then men.  Men are more apt to engage in high risk or dangerous behaviors.  Men also on average have higher stress levels than women, mostly due to working conditions.

The bright side is that most of these things can be prevented.  Get regular checkups, and engage in a healthy and active lifestyle.  It can ultimately add years to your life.

The Easy Way To Quit Smoking

Monday, July 14th, 2008

After having tried (and failed) with the patch, the gum, the various prescription medications, weening off, and the cold turkey method to quit smoking. This writer is proud to say that there is a method that works.

It’s a not a wonder drug, or a hypnotist, its just a book.  That’s right a book.  It’s called “The Easy Way To Stop Smoking” by Allen Carr.  It has sold more than six million copies and saved millions of lives.  Including my own.

If you have ever thought of quitting, get this book.  The reader is instructed to smoke the entire time, and it only takes a few days to get through.  Once your done, you have one last smoke and walk away forever.  It’s been 3 years for me.   If you’ve tried it all, try this!  Trust me it works.

Monday, July 14th, 2008

The FDA has asked  manufacturers of 10 anti-depressants to print a warning on labels that anyone taking the drugs should be carefully observed for symptoms such as increased depression, suicidal thinking, increased hostility or agitation.

Drugs covered in the warning are the brand-name Prozac (generically known as fluoxetine); Zoloft (sertraline); Paxil (paroxetine); Luvox (fluvoxamine); Celexa (citalopram); Lexapro (escitalopram); Wellbutrin (bupropion); Effexor (venlafaxine); Serzone (nefazodone); and Remeron (mirtazapine).

Pap Test

Monday, July 14th, 2008

A Pap test is an important component for womens health.  In fact, in some cases it can mean the difference between life and death.  A Pap can help detect early indications of cervical cancer.  In most cases early detection and treatment can prevent the cancer all together.

Any woman sexually active for 3 years or more should be tested routinely.  If you are younger than 30 a yearly pap test and pelvic exam is recommended.  For women older than 30, consult your doctor for recommended exam frequency.

The only women who do not require regular pap test are women over 65 who have had normal pap tests in the past and who are told by their doctor that they no longer require testing.

How To Prevent Prostate Cancer

Monday, July 14th, 2008

One of the main men’s health concerns today is cancer.  More specifically prostate cancer.  While there is no fail proof method of prevention, there are steps that you can take to help reduce your risk.

Here are a few of the ways you can prevent prostate cancer:

Diet and Lifestyle Changes
Diet and exercise are two of the main things you can control right now to prevent cancer.  Stay away from high fat foods, eat lots of fruits and vegetables, and exercise everyday.  Walk around the block if you have to, exercise can greatly reduce cancer causing stress levels.  Consult your doctor for more information on cancer preventing diet choices.

Medications
Current research does not yet support any medications for the prevention of prostate cancer, however there are a few hopeful candidates on the horizon that affect testostorin levels.  However these drugs also come with side effects and are not usually recommended for cancer prevention

Selenium and Vitamin E
Recent studies have suggested that daily supplementation of the mineral selenium and vitamin E can reduce the risk of prostate cancer.  As with anything talk to your doctor before implementing any dietary supplements.
